Human Reunion of ‘Secret Reunion’
Ed-Finding genuine friendship of two discarded men from different nations
Recently, Korea has been filled with feverish excitement of ‘Avatar’. It seems unlikely that a Korean movie can exceed the fame of Avatar. However, the new Korean movie ‘Secret Reunion; is reviving the reputation of the film industry in Korea by drawing more than two million viewers in a short time period of time. Despite a lack of 3D and other splendid images, it’ competitive power lies within the Korean theme of a divided nation and the actors’ acting ability.
Lee Han-kyu(Song Gang-ho) was a National Intelligence Service (NIS) agent from South Korea and Song Ji-won (Gang Dong-won) was an agent from North. However, after the gunfight occurring in the middle of Seoul, they were abandoned from their respective nations due to the failure of their mission. Six years later, they accidentally meet and work towards hiding their status from each other. When push comes to shove, the two men come to understand and sympathize with each other. Eventually, they become friends instead of enemies.
‘Secret Reunion’ is quite different from other spy movies covering South and North Korea. It is not the action and situation of the divided nation that the movie focuses on. As Ji-won said frequently, it is the lesson of ‘Humanity’ that the movie tells us. Although they were enemies, they became true friends, but also brothers through human sympathy. The movie shows us that we are alike. We miss family, sympathize with and understand each other. We expected magnificent action scenes of confrontation between the two Koreas before we watched the movie. However, after watching it, we can feel human love and loyalty of two humans.
