Busan shows its importance in the movie industry

There is a new decade in the making at Busan Cinema Center. We will be on our way to the shift while protecting the fundamental values of The movie theater, said Jo Joo-Hyun (Leader of Video Business Team, Busan Cinema Center), celebrating its 10th anniversary. What is more, “Restriction of Sending,” filmed in Busan and released in June, attracted more than 500,000 viewers for the first time this year and progressed to be all the rage. As such, the reputation of Busan as a city of movies showed no end in sight.

To top it all off, Busan is illustrious as a filming location as it is a city of movies. Haeundae in Busan has clearly become a popular filming location. The movie“Restriction of Sending” was also featured all over Haeundae, and it depicted more casual scenes of it. Kookje Newspaper added that there were 125 shoots centered in Haeundae earlier this year. Another beloved filming location is Gwangan Bridge. The others are the Nampo-dong, Songdo, and Yeongdo areas. Those places invariably appear in the background of the movie. Although the movie industry has contracted, Busan has still gained popularity as a filming location.

Furthermore, Busan, a film city, held numerous events including the Busan International Children's and Youth Film Festival, Busan International Short Film Festival, and Busan Peace Film Festival. Film festivals held in Busan are not just worthwhile in gathering audiences and running movies. Besides Busan International Film festival, a wide range of film festivals such as Rooftop Moonlight Theater, underprivileged social programs, and solid film industry by the Busan Film Commission, helps stabilize its citizen-participating communities. Not only that, but Busan is also unearthing citizen-participation video policies, aiming at being nominated for a UNESCO designated city. The International Ocean Film Festival launched in September 2015 also contributes to valuing the city of Busan and raises the awareness of environmental preservation of the sea, the basis of life. Cho Hyung-dong (Member, Busan Film Commission Strategic Planning Team) said, “The development of the film industry broadened the range of students’ choices by providing film knowledge and satisfying cultural needs, operating various courses from film liberal arts courses to film theory and practice courses throughout the year.”
