The Diversity Council of Pusan National University (PNU) posted on the PNU website on June 29th. It announced it would start in the fall semester this year.

The council was established on January 25th to reflect the comments of PNU members. PNU is the sixth university to have a Diversity Council, following Korea University, Kyungpook National University, Seoul National University, Seoul National University of Science and Technology, and KAIST.

The council comprises less than 20 members selected from various organizations following the guidelines. The 12 ex officio members include the Director of Institute for Gender Research, Head of Center for Students with Disabilities, the Chairman of a Student Council, the Chairman of Personnel Council, and the Chairman of Staff Council. Other members will be nominated by the PNU president among the personnel in PNU who experienced the protection of diversity.

The council has contributed to laying the basis for kickoff meetings and guidelines since last semester and will implement three affairs. First of all, the paper on diversity will be published. The council announced, “The paper will include the details depending on gender, nationality, age, and domestic forms of PNU members.”

Furthermore, it will develop and support education programs related to diversity. Through regular meetings twice a year, extracurricular programs can spread out the value of diversity to PNU members. Additionally, it will support the policy research of diversity and data acquisition in PNU. In particular, the president will be notified every year, and the contents will be reflected in the policies of PNU.

Jang Deok-Hyun (Chairman, The PNU Diversity Council) said, “The period of when the Diversity Council was established is somewhat late compared to other universities. We expect this council will become a community for the minority.”
