Channel PNU provides information by comparing and analyzing four dormitories at Pusan National University.

In university life, housing problems are an important factor directly related to the quality of life. Pusan National University (PNU) students also carefully search for important information before choosing a student dormitory. However, it is not easy to see at a glance the information provided by the PNU dormitory or the actual residents' reviews.

Therefore, “Channel PNU” has been able to grasp serious information related to four PNU dormitories. In the course of the coverage, there were some errors in the data published on the website of the PNU dormitory or problems that did not reflect recent changes. We will provide information on the latest tendencies and significant reports related to PNU dormitory to help students understand information easily.

Jilli Hall

The Jilli Hall was completed in 2001 as a dormitory for men consisting of Ga-dong, Na-dong, and Da-dong with 8 floors each. Each building has from 155 to 156 rooms, so it can accommodate from 310 to 312 students. The area of the room is 13 square meters in all three buildings, and it is a double room. Convenient facilities include a reading room, laundry room, computer room, dining room, lounge (deploying vending machines), public showers, and public toilets.

The Jilli Hall does not have a shower room and a toilet in each room, so it uses shared shower room and a toilet installed on each floor. In some cases, students prefer it because they do not have to clean the bathroom directly, but most students avoid the Jilli Hall because of the multi-user system. The deterioration of facilities is also considered a chronic problem of the Jilli Hall. Due to these differences in facilities, the cost of living in the Jilli Hall is lower than other dormitories. As of this year, the management cost of the same male living room Woongbee Hall is 6,670, while the Jilli Hall is 5,380 won, which is about 1,290 won cheaper.

Compared to other dormitories, the Jilli Hall suffered from poor support every year (“Channel PNU”, August 3rd, 2022). According to the administration office of the PNU dormitory, the average competition rate between Woongbee Hall and Jayoo Hall remained at 1:1.57 from 2020 to 2022, while Jilli Hall passed all applicants for three years. In order to solve the problem of insufficient number of applicants of the Jilli Hall, PNU dormitory has temporarily changed Da-dong of three buildings to a single-room system from 2020. As a result, the dormitory has been temporarily recovering, and the PNU dormitory has been trying to fix the temporary single room system.

Woongbee Hall

Another dormitory for men, Woongbee Hall, is divided into A and B. Building A consists of double rooms, disabled rooms, and condominium type rooms, and building B has double rooms and various convenient facilities without a condominium type building. The size of the Woongbee Hall room is 22.4m², which is the largest compared to 13m² of Jilli Hall, 11.4m² of Jayoo Hall, and 11.4m² of Hyowonjae. Unlike the Jilli Hall, the shower room and the toilet are individually installed in each room, and there is also a fitness room that can be used by the Jilli Hall students, Hyowonjae students, and outsiders.

In some cases, women live in Woongbee Hall, a male dormitory. If it is the spouse of a married graduate student, professor, and so on. Residing in a condominium type room of building A. The 39.6m² condominium room for graduate students is also available as a family unit, including children. The condominium type room is a form sharing a corridor without separate facilities from the student room.

Based on the double room, PNU students prefer the Woongbee Hall to the Jilli Hall. Although the cost of living in the Jilli Hall is inexpensive, it is more convenient to live in the Woongbee Hall when considering the facilities. Therefore, Woongbee Hall has the highest competition rate among the four dormitories every year. Kang Hyeon-gyu (Dept. of Business Administration, 21), who joined Woongbee Hall this year, said, “Compared to the Jilli Hall, I have to pay about 200,000 won per semester, but considering the convenient facilities, it is not too much to pay that much.”

However, various facilities such as a reading room, a laundry room, a computer room, a rest room, and a copier located in B-dong are not available to building A students after 1am. This is because traffic between building A and building B is restricted after 1 am when the curfew begins.

Jayoo Hall

The Jayoo Hall is the newest dormitory for women, which was built in 2018. Unlike the other three dormitories, which are located in number 700 of PNU building area, the Jayoo Hall is located at a low position of 300. It is divided into two buildings, A and B, and there is a condominium type room in building A, and the disabled room is only in B-dong. Building A and building B are connected through the first basement, and convenience facilities such as the reading room, laundry room, computer room, and rest room can be used jointly after curfew. The fitness room is only available to Jayoo Hall students on the first floor of building B.

The student rooms are all double rooms, with a shower room and a toilet inside the room area of 11.4m², which is the smallest of the PNU dormitories. The shower room and the toilet are separate, not toghether as is usualm and the sink is also dry process in the hallway. The condominium type room for graduate students are all single rooms, consisting of type A, type B, and type C. Types A and B are single rooms with the same structure as double rooms, and the utilization rate of graduate students is high, and type C is a large area of 41.8m² and its price is also high, so it is mainly used by faculty members.

Jayoo Hall is a dormitory for female students and has more security than other dormitories. In order to enter, students must use their pass card twice: at the outside door and the inside door to enter. In addition, one of the four dormitories is equipped with an emergency bell next to the private bed, which can be used in case of an emergency.

Hyowonjae

On the surface, Hyowonjae, the only dormitory for men and women, recognizes the card at the entrance and separates men and women by entering and leaving the room. All rooms have an area of 11.4 m² and are divided into single and double rooms. The competition rate is lower than other dormitories. In the case of single-person rooms that can be supported by students, the average passing grade of this year is 7th place, 10th place in Hyowonjae male students, and 10th place in Hyowonjae female students. In the case of single rooms that can be applied for by students, the average passing grade of this year is 7th place in the Jilli Hall, 10th place in Hyowonjae male students, and 10th place in Hyowonjae female students.

Hyowonjae is a dormitory that focuses on creating a learning atmosphere for students preparing for examinations such as examinations and professions. Therefore, there was an obligation to take the national examination as a requirement for residence, but the obligation to take the examination was lifted this year as more students were preparing for other employment. As a result, applications are being provided for students on a leave of absence, suspended graduation, graduate students, and students who want a learning atmosphere. It is the only one of the four dormitories in which students on a leave of absence can live.

Hyowonjae, the oldest dormitory, was built in 1990, and aging and facility problems have been constantly raised. Since the building is located in the border area leading to the mountain, the problem of insects is also chronic. It is easy to see that posts about Hyowonjae's bug problem are constantly being written about in PNU anonymous online community “Everytime.” Especially in the summer, the problem caused by insects is serious, and common insecticides are placed on each floor. In addition, there are no amenities such as a single restaurant, fitness room, and elevator. Toilets and showers should also be used for each floor in common, and students are required to notice their facilities.
