On October 23rd, the first engineering building aton the Yangsan campus, the Gyeongam Engineering Building, was completed, which is expected to develop PNU’s biomedical health industry.

Pusan National University (PNU) has completed the construction of the first engineering education and research facility, the Gyeongam Engineering Building, on the Yangsan campus. The Gyeongam Engineering Building is planned for use in the education and research of the School of Biomedical Convergence Engineering within the College of Information and Biomedical Engineering.

On October 24th, PNU held an inauguration ceremony to celebrate the completion of the Gyeongam Engineering Building. The Gyeongam Engineering Building, located on the Yangsan campus, was established with a total project cost of approximately 22.6 billion won in order to attract the newly established College of Information and Biomedical Engineering in 2020. With the completion of this project, the College of Information and Biomedical Engineering now has a dedicated building.

The Gyeongam Engineering Building, the first engineering education and research facility on the Yangsan campus, is expected to pave the way for future expansions into the engineering field. The existing Yangsan campus was primarily focused on medical disciplines, graduate schools of medicine, dentistry, traditional Korean medicine, and a nursing college. Baek Kwang-Yeol (Prof. of Data Science, PNU), the Chair of the School of Biomedical Convergence Engineering, stated, “This completion enabled the foundation for comprehensive campus developments of the and engineering departments and other related fields to come together for research and development in the realm of biomedical sciences.”

In the future, the School of Biomedical Convergence Engineering within the College of Information and Biomedical Engineering will conduct classes and research in a dedicated facility. Until now, the School of Biomedical Convergence Engineering had been conducting classes and research at the ABC Center (Advanced Biomedical Convergence Center). The School of Biomedical Convergence Engineering is now planning to carry out teaching and research activities in the Gyeongam Engineering Building, which is currently being used by thefor Office of College of Information and Biomedical Engineering, and the School of Biomedical Convergence Engineering’s office and lecture room. Chair Baek said, “Previously, there was a significant lack of space for students' practical training, but having an independent building now allows us to provide proper education.”

With the completion of this inauguration, the establishment of a biomedical industry-academic collaboration cluster is expected to gain momentum. The newly established College of Information and Biomedical Engineering, with its independent building, places a strong emphasis on the development of the specialized life science region, in the southeastern region. This development is poised to drive regional growth in the life science industry. PNU President Cha Jeong-In said during the inauguration ceremony, “Now, if the recruitment of the Veterinary School is completed (in the future), the Yangsan campus will leap to become an integrated campus that is unprecedented in the world of biomedical health, including zoonosis.”
